I did a thing!

I didn't eat anything for 23 hours.  This should help reduce my insulin resistance. I'm not certain i did the thing perfectly but that's ok, i'll keep trying and tweaking.

The issue might be the half and half i used in coffee this morning, that's not quite perfect, the fat half is ok in reasonable quantity, check, but the milk half probably has too much whey which might have been just barely enough to 'break' the 'fast' metabolically.  However, a huge part of doing this well is getting used to stuff you can manage to do every single day, just like training wheels, you learn do do most of the stuff well with the hardest part made easier for a bit.

so when i can I will switch to heavy cream and only do that with one cup in the morning to get closer to on it. and if im hungry tonight i will eat dinner, I just felt fine with a big glass of tea so I let that ride this time, the only thing that you really cannot be on again off again in this is upping the fat like i did here.

This is avocado, egg, mayo, salt. its soooo good. and its actually a lot lot better than the tuna I had yesterday, more fat, less protein.

water, yea, I need to get back on top of having lots of water. I'll go do that now!

So there it is.

This is lunch today, day 3 back on the way of eating thinger.   I got derailed, back on the horse after a year and a half with some new ideas.

Worth noting is that even after that long and after woofing all manner of snacks and candy and even after the holidays and a final round of mega extreme nachos... I weighed in for the restart and was still a few pounds lighter than I was the last time I started.

throughout the slacker 'off the way of eating' period I really felt like my body had changed substantially. when I'd get normal soup at a local deli I would add a couple packets of mayo to round it out, I craved the fat, like that balance was now ingrained.

I suspect having been 100% for 5 months or so then really not so bad cheat wise for another several months reset my metabolism back to a place it had not been since the low fat craze of the early 80s took hold and messed everything up.  My next curiosity will be to see what impact that has on this new effort which will include the addition of intermittent fasting.  To start I skip breakfast, this is also counter to everything we've been told, but unlike before it has not been that hard at all to do.  So I get about 12-14 hours a day of not eating, this wont make a huge impact but it is a good stepping stone to extending that.

Check out Dr Jason Feng, he's got all the info on how this works and how it helps reset your insulin resistance which is what every one of us with fat in the middle suffers from thanks to our AMA FDA sanctioned food pyramid.

The meal above was very satisfying, even though its small and has nearly no carbs and came after no breakfast after a simple meat and cream cheese dinner the night before.

For me I think the key is that there is flavor and color, looking at this lunch today felt satisfying, all those colors and their accompanying flavors really help that mental side of eating, I feel zero deprivation and I already have no cravings for carby food.

Bonus: one of the main reasons I jumped off the wagon last was the expense, partially psychologically I felt like I could not stick to it if I could not afford to load up on goodish stuff that was on the plan, now I have the savings of not eating a meal and thanks to my still altered appetite its not nearly as expensive.

So the meal above was about $3.50 and that was from a local deli who even charged 75cents for one skinny slice of bacon.  Even at that, their normal carb-laden (read much much cheaper to produce) meals run 10 bucks!

Thought of the day on the subject, when hungry and trying to do a meal, think a bit like you would if you were out real camping in the wild, gathering stuff to build a fire.  Think of carbs as wet moss on the sticks you find, not only does it not burn but it keeps the stick from even catching fire til you've consumed a lot of energy to dry it out.  After that focus on the stuff that burns with what you now have: a fat furnace.  Think of carbs as useless, because when it comes to how you want to feel, they are.  It has really worked for me, down at that deli i see the bags of chips and the fried rice the same way I look at the carpet or the chairs: not food. with that filter i no longer see 'nothing to eat' i see oh cool i could get those eggs and that cheese and they sell a side of avocado and a side of bacon... suddenly its a nomerific buffet tasty and free from guilt.

Breakfast

So, I have't posted in ages, I stopped losing weight a long time ago, kind of fell out of the lifestyle a bit then a lot, let myself slide into the mindset of 'off the diet' and 'cheats' but now i'm back with the new high fat perspective which cannot be done with carb watching alone,

This ham right here is too much protein if I just had that so i fix that with a big ol mess o mayo and squish it into a nummy shape and inhale about 4 of this a morning, way more pleasing than the sausage patties I was doing, more fat not hungry 2 hours later.

Also throwing a pat of butter in my coffee, should add coconut oil but thats more cumbersome to get going when i'm in a rush in the morning.

clothes already feeling loose again.

Alfredo, Brat, Broc

Super easy go to nummy weeknight dinner, fry up some brats (5) in oil, drain the oil but keep the mess in the pan, heat and chop up broccoli, chop up the brats, dump it all back in the pan, add alfredo, simmer, serve.

I love the color the alfredo comes out to with the brat fry, its like epic gravy only tastier, rich flavor, texture, feels like an extra effort treat when its really almost as easy as nuking a frozen dinner (and good luck finding one of those that doesnt have crap added to it you cant eat.)

happy cookin,

PS, just realizing i've hit the one year mark since I started blogging about being 50lbs in, i'd love to be dishing advice about how i managed to break that 50lb wall and go further but I havent, however, I never let up on the plan, its a lifestyle and I kept at that even when i got slack and slackier, now i'm finally nosing down a bit again, trying to be 'better' and I think this is a good time to chime in again, I think this is really the point at which living a lifestyle pays off, i'm motivated again, my stress level is low enough that i can manage to try harder etc... but where am i compared to the same spot on previous attempts?

previously when i'd lost 50lbs i went 'off' for a wedding, stayed off for a bbq the next month and never went back on, by this time on that plan I was back up 70lbs to a new high! yay! (sarchasm) this time? I weighed 296 last time i checked, I got a whole year of smaller clothes, less sore knees and back, more activities with my wife and son, fewer embarrassing places i didn't fit, i didnt reach my goal, I didnt get to go skiing but as i 'start anew' its not anew, i'm starting from where i left off, i'm 82lbs to freedom, not 130. the old me would be disappointed if i lost another 40lbs and plateaued again, the new me thinks of all the more stuff i could do at 256 that i cant now and wants to not only get there but also way more than anything stay there. when keeping the ground you've mustered trumps how fast you lose, your future self will thank you, so thanks 2014 dave, i still love this new body you built :)

Hot grilled asian chicken caesar salad. YUM!

First, do your standard, chop up some romaine, toss some parmesan add some newman's own caesar dressing then park it.

You want to make that ahead of time because there's somethin better than even that epic deal of the same name and freshness that you can get at wegmans or the like, cold chicken even on salad is just, well, meh.

Particularly because its generally not seasoned in a way that you'd eat it on its own.  This is, I grill these hot for 20min, 10ish on each side, adding a lot of soy sauce and asian seasoning (costco's name, lemon pepper garlic-y ginger-y action). a lot of the soy sauce boils off, drips down in the grill and steams, this really give the chicken an extra lightly smoked flavor that just rocks it.

When you are done fressing on this you'll have had a better meal than most 4-5 star restaurants could have made you, 100% on the 'diet' and really cheap.

Old werld snack

wish i'd have thought to take a pic but i'm sure you can imagine.

I was feeling fried and out of it and just generally tired unmotivated 3pm typical action.

top it off, one about my favorite things someone at the office did up some home made super spicy hummus! omg!

so i stroll in and see the sinfulness of it, check the nutri on the various what you can scrape your hummus up with and they are all bad (that makes me think of that line from true lies).

so sad faced i made my billionth cup of americano action and strolled off to the biffy

but then i had this romantic mediterranean fantasy, i'm on a ship, my viking locks wafting in the wind, its olden times and i need sustenance for the rest of my journey, thats when it hit me, i had better eat something, i'm really fucking losing it! :)

so i went back to the kitchen and took a ramekin and tossed 5 grapes in it, then smothered them in 2tbsps of this epic hummus.

ate it with a spoon right there.

figured ok fine, i cheated but i didnt have wheat or any other processed crap so i tried.

back to my dex and did some googling, turns out  I had all of like 6 grams of carbs and from pretty healthy unprocessed sources and it was REALLY satisfying like i'd just snarfed a fat cheesecake.

so much flavor

all the wins.
